The Rainbow Between Heart and Reason

By Pierre Restany. 1995

It is destinies like wire of weaving: into high or low string, certain points wind more sensitive than of others to the interlacing or the braid. The example of Julio Le Parc is for me highly significant. Our destiny crossed on several occasions and thus embroidered the trace of a cordial friendship in its intermittencies.

Julio Le Parc was ankle worker of the GRAV before being the floret for it emblematic. The Group of search for visual art, that we quickly named the band with the small son of Denise Rene, was founded in Paris in 1960, at the same time as the group of new realistic. I followed with a great interest the action of these young kinetic artists who had in common, with us the new realistic ones, the conscience of the work within an industrial company with his finishing apogee. Julio Le Parc and its friends of the GRAV were very sensitive to their modes of insertion in the urban environment and I remember, in 1966, of a formidable tour through Paris, criss-crossed by various stages performances. The geometry was descended in the street and I had followed, with as much curiosity than of passion, this descent of art in the life: after their famous labyrinth of Biennial of Paris, the members of the GRAV were to slacken the rate/rhythm of their collective experiments. Their period of common action was of short duration like besides that of new realistic. The ones like the others were recycled perfectly by the consumer society within its modernity.

Beyond this sociological platform founded on the relationship of art and industry, our ways crossed again and on several occasions. I met Julio Le Parc in Buenos Aires and in particular in 1964.

I followed his protesting action during May 1968, his arrest at the factory Renault de Flins, and I stood together in all the steps taken by Denise Rene in his favour. Julio Le Parc was not expelled of France and it is truly a good thing. He is certainly one of the artists who contributed in a major way to the opening of kinetic painting towards horizons of freer communication and language. Meanwhile, in 1966, he had obtained the Great Award of painting at the Biennial of Venice. Two years after the Award of Rauschenberg which devoted at the same time the emergence of the new American school and the universalization of the Pop style, the plays became hits in Venice. The worthy institution was to crown the current of geometrical art kinetic "the Op after the Pop" as one said at that time. I remember this June in Venice. II made a terrible heat at the time of the inauguration of Biennial and all occurred to Florian much more than to Giardini. Everyone thought that the jury was going to crown Soto the large guru of the penetrable ones. A reversal of last hour on behalf of Palma Bucarelli was to decide some differently. All in restart in a kinetic spirit, its choice was made on the personality more for the second generation of the artists of the movement.

Julio Le Parc became thus the emblem of the GRAV, which could not miss throwing the distress in the heart of its fellow-members. The Great Award of Venice rings the knell of the existence of the group. Thereafter, I met again Julio Le Parc at various places of the world and in particular in Cuba where he became one of the most active craftsmen of the institutional resumption of Biennial of Havana by animating a workshop of creation there.

The character is thus for me a creative bird which, from time to time, crosses the sky of my memories. However, I have much appreciated his chromatic evolution and his period rainbow that were identified for me as the intellectual nomadism of this beautiful spirit which knew, in his work, admirably how to reconcile the work and the reason.
